Getting a system permitted

Regulation 43 sets treatment level requirements (TL1 through TL3) based on site conditions, so the soil evaluation determines not just field size but the treatment technology required. A registered professional engineer's design is needed for many sites.

  1. Soil evaluation. On the actual field location, before design. It decides what you are allowed to build.
  2. Design and site plan. Tank size, absorption area, and setbacks from wells, lines, water and foundations.
  3. Permit application. Submitted with the soil report. Allow weeks, more in the spring rush.
  4. Installation. By a licensed installer where Colorado requires one.
  5. Inspection before backfill. Trenches must be seen open.

Colorado classifies required effluent quality by treatment level. A site with good soil and ample separation to groundwater may only need a septic tank and conventional field.
