What the pump-out includes

A proper service removes both liquid and solids — the sludge layer is the whole point — checks the baffles or effluent filter, and notes the condition of the tank. A truck that takes only the liquid and leaves compacted sludge behind has not pumped your tank, whatever the invoice says.

What adds to the price

• Buried lids. Locating and hand-digging to the lid commonly adds $100–$250. Risers installed once eliminate this fee forever.
• Distance. If the truck cannot park within roughly 100 feet of the tank, extra hose lengths add cost.
• Neglect. A tank pumped after ten years instead of four has compacted sludge that takes longer to remove.
• Second compartment or second tank. Two-compartment tanks and aerobic systems take more time.

How often it is due

Every three to five years for a family of four on a 1,000 gallon tank; sooner with a garbage disposal or a smaller tank. The pump schedule calculator works out your exact interval. Skipping the interval does not save money — it moves the cost to the drainfield, at roughly thirty times the price.
