Arid soils with caliche layers, shallow bedrock in the mountains, and clay in the river valleys. Groundwater is deep in most areas, which relieves separation requirements, but scarce and heavily protected.
Conventional trenches, seepage pits where soil depth allows, and advanced treatment where groundwater protection requires it. Evapotranspiration beds are used in some very arid locations.

New Mexico's liquid waste permit is issued by NMED directly, and the program licenses installers. Registration and permit renewal obligations apply to certain system types.

A three-bedroom home at 150 gallons per bedroom produces 450 gallons per day of design flow. On sandy loam that needs roughly 750 square feet of absorption area.
