Silty clay loam over much of the east, with slow percolation. Central Kansas has sandier ground. Western Kansas is dry with deep water tables, which eases separation requirements considerably.
Conventional trenches, lagoons in rural areas where lot size permits — Kansas is one of the states where residential wastewater lagoons remain a real option — and mounds on tight soils.

County sanitary codes govern, and they vary substantially. Lagoon systems require significant setbacks and acreage, and not every county permits them.

A three-bedroom home at 150 gallons per bedroom produces 450 gallons per day of design flow. On sandy loam that needs roughly 750 square feet of absorption area.
