Permafrost, seasonal frost to six feet or more, and shallow bedrock dominate the design problem. Much of interior Alaska cannot use a conventional trench at all because the soil below the active layer never thaws. Coastal and southcentral areas have workable glacial soils.
Deep trenches, seepage pits where permitted, and insulated or mounded systems are all common. Insulation over trenches is a routine part of Alaskan design rather than an exception.

Alaska requires design by a registered engineer for most systems, not merely a soil evaluation. Anchorage operates its own on-site program with additional local requirements, and remote communities may fall under different arrangements entirely.

A three-bedroom home at 150 gallons per bedroom produces 450 gallons per day of design flow. On sandy loam that needs roughly 750 square feet of absorption area.
