Getting a system permitted

  3. Permit application. Submitted with the soil report. Allow weeks, more in the spring rush.
  4. Installation. By a licensed installer where Oregon requires one.
  5. Inspection before backfill. Trenches must be seen open.

Questions specific to Oregon

Why does Deschutes County have nitrate requirements?
The soil around Bend is volcanic cinder and sand that drains extremely fast over a shallow aquifer used for drinking water. Nitrate from conventional septic systems reaches groundwater with little attenuation, so DEQ designated the area and requires nitrogen-reducing treatment for systems there. It substantially changes the cost of building in south Deschutes County.
How long is an Oregon site evaluation valid?
A site evaluation approval attaches to the parcel and the proposed design, and DEQ sets a validity period after which it may need to be revisited. If you are buying land with an existing evaluation, confirm it is still current and matches the house you intend to build.
