Mountain valleys with coarse gravel and cobble that drains very fast, glacial till on the plains, and shallow bedrock in the mountains. Nitrate loading to shallow gravel aquifers is the recurring regulatory concern.

The Gallatin valley sits on coarse gravel over a shallow aquifer that supplies drinking water. Effluent moves quickly through gravel with little treatment, so nitrate reaches groundwater. The regulatory response has been to require higher treatment levels across much of the valley, which raises system cost significantly.
