Why is the Red River valley so hard for septic systems?
It is the bed of a glacial lake, and the clay left behind is extremely fine and nearly impermeable. Percolation rates fail conventional standards on a large share of sites, so mounds, at-grades and in some cases holding tanks are the practical options. It is some of the most difficult septic ground in the United States.
Does frost depth change septic design in North Dakota?
Yes. Lines must be laid deep enough or insulated to avoid freezing, tanks are set deeper, and risers need insulation. Cold soil also slows bacterial digestion in the tank, which is a reason to keep to the shorter end of a pumping interval.
