The ground you are actually building on

Glacial till across most of the state with slow-percolating silty clay loam. Northern Indiana has sandy outwash areas that permit easily. Southern Indiana has karst limestone and thin soils over rock.

Getting a system permitted

Indiana requires a soil evaluation by a registered soil scientist, and the rule specifies loading rates by soil texture and structure. Perc tests alone are not the basis of design.

  2. Design and site plan. Tank size, absorption area, and setbacks from wells, lines, water and foundations.
  3. Permit application. Submitted with the soil report. Allow weeks, more in the spring rush.
  4. Installation. By a licensed installer where Indiana requires one.
  5. Inspection before backfill. Trenches must be seen open.

Questions specific to Indiana

Does Indiana still use perc tests?
The design basis is a soil morphology evaluation by a registered soil scientist, which reads the soil profile rather than timing water in a hole. It gives a loading rate directly. Some counties still ask for a perc test as supporting information, but the soil evaluation governs.
Why are mounds so common in Indiana?
Glacial till. Much of Indiana's soil has a dense layer within a few feet of the surface and a seasonal high water table above it. Building the absorption area up in sand is often the only way to get the required separation, so elevated sand mounds are standard on a large share of sites.
