Flat coastal plain, sandy soils, and a water table that is close to the surface across much of Sussex and Kent counties. Separation to groundwater, not percolation rate, is usually the limiting factor.
Elevated sand mounds are extremely common in Delaware because of the shallow water table. Gravity systems appear on the better-drained sites, and advanced treatment is used to reduce nitrogen in sensitive areas.

Delaware licenses site evaluators, designers, installers and inspectors as separate classes, and requires a Class H permit for system operation in some cases. Nitrogen-reducing technology is required in designated areas.

A three-bedroom home at 150 gallons per bedroom produces 450 gallons per day of design flow. On sandy loam that needs roughly 750 square feet of absorption area.
