Alabama splits three ways. The Tennessee Valley in the north sits on limestone with karst features and shallow bedrock. The Black Belt running through the centre is heavy, shrink-swell clay that most conventional fields cannot use. The coastal plain in the south is sandy and generally the easiest ground in the state to permit.

Alabama licenses onsite installers and requires a soil evaluation by a licensed soil classifier or an approved health department evaluator. Manufacturers and pumpers are separately permitted, so the parties on a job are often three different licence holders.

A three-bedroom home at 150 gallons per bedroom produces 450 gallons per day of design flow. On sandy loam that needs roughly 750 square feet of absorption area.
